Stellar liquidity pools

Stellar's liquidity pools are automated market makers built into the protocol. Each pool holds a reserve of two assets and prices them against each other using a constant-product formula — as one side is drawn down, it gets progressively more expensive in terms of the other. Depositors receive pool shares recording their proportional claim on the reserves.

The mechanism worth understanding before anything else is what happens when the two reserves move apart in relative price. Because the pool automatically sells whichever asset is appreciating and accumulates whichever is depreciating, the value of a withdrawn position can differ from simply having held the two assets separately. This is a property of the formula, not a fee or a failure — it is commonly called impermanent loss.

The safety context is the assets themselves. A pool is only ever as sound as the two assets inside it: if one is issued by an account that kept its freeze or clawback authority, that power reaches the pooled balance too. Pool depth also tells you how much the reserves can absorb before pricing moves sharply against a large order.
